My Dear Brethren,

Announcements:
Our next (online) Unstated Meeting will be on Saturday, January 18th at 10 AM Eastern Time. See below for details.
We have a new YouTube channel, which has videos of all of our previous Unstated Meetings: https://www.youtube.com/@ResearchLodge

First, Happy New Year to one and all! I am hoping that 2025 will be an outstanding year for Freemasonry in general, and Masonic Research in Virginia in particular. I hope that every single one of you will visit a Research Lodge this year. Just one visit from each of you, to a Research Lodge in your jurisdiction, that’s all I ask.

I needed to take a few weeks off to regroup. Believe it or not, I have faithfully sent out a new research paper every single week for FIVE YEARS. That’s kind of impressive, when I step back and take a look. I have reflected on how time-consuming it is to locate, scan, OCR, and edit every one of these papers that come to me in hard copy. Some I do receive digitally, which saves me a few steps. But I still need to read every single one of them, write a short thumbnail description, and record the metadata associated with each one. Five years also means a lot of you have not seen the original papers we emailed out, since not everyone was on my email list from the beginning.

I say all that to say this: In order to buy myself some breathing room, as I am now serving as Worshipful Master of Virginia Research Lodge No. 1777 and working on several projects, I am going to start over from the beginning with No. 1. I will be interspersing the new papers with those previously released; as time permits me to scan & prepare new research papers, since I still have quite a stack available to me. It’s either that, or send these emails less frequently or stop altogether. We will still have Unstated Meetings as well as Stated Meetings to promote, so I don’t want to break the cycle of a weekly email from me. So, if you recognize a paper you have read before, bear with me for that week, a new paper is coming shortly.

Here is our latest installment of research papers from Virginia Research Lodge No. 1777. If you would like to be added to the list, or have a friend who would like to be on the list, just send me an email or message. This week’s submission is from… yours truly! Wor. Christopher Winston Douglas, entitled “What is a Research Lodge?” which was presented to Ocean View Lodge No. 335 on February 19, 2016.

This paper describes what a Research Lodge is, and how to find more information about attending one.

If you enjoy these weekly papers, I highly recommend attending one of Virginia’s premier Research Lodges. Hearing a paper presented in person by the author, with the discussion afterwards, is a far superior experience to simply reading it for yourself. Also, there are papers presented in a Research Lodge that will never be made available online.
